Your workout clothes work hard for you – through sweat, movement, and frequent washing. But even the best-quality gear can lose its shape and performance if it’s not cared for properly. With a few simple habits, you can make your sportswear last longer, look better, and perform as it should. Here’s how to take care of your activewear from wash to storage.

Wash with care

It’s tempting to toss your gym clothes straight into the washer after a workout, but a little attention goes a long way. Turn your clothes inside out before washing to protect colors and reduce friction on the fabric’s surface. Zip up zippers and close Velcro straps so they don’t snag other items.

Wash in cold water with a gentle detergent that’s free of bleach or fabric softener. Fabric softeners can damage the technical fibers that make your clothes moisture-wicking and quick-drying. If your gear smells musty, add a small amount of white vinegar to the rinse cycle – it neutralizes odors without harming the material.

Skip the dryer

The dryer might be convenient, but it’s one of the biggest enemies of sportswear. High heat can break down elastic fibers, causing clothes to lose their stretch and fit. Instead, air-dry your gear on a rack or hanger in a well-ventilated area. It not only extends the life of your clothes but also helps them keep their shape.

If you need your clothes to dry faster, roll them in a towel and gently press out excess water before hanging them up. This shortens drying time without using heat.

Eliminate sweat odor effectively

Sweat odor can be stubborn, especially in synthetic fabrics. If you can’t wash your clothes right after a workout, rinse them in cold water to prevent bacteria from setting in.

Every so often, give your gear a “deep clean” by soaking it in a mixture of water and a bit of baking soda or vinegar for 15–30 minutes before washing. This helps remove both odor and detergent buildup that can accumulate in the fibers over time.

Sort by fabric and color

Activewear comes in many materials – from cotton and polyester to spandex and merino wool – and they don’t all need the same treatment. Wool and wool blends should be washed on a gentle or wool cycle with a special detergent, while synthetics can handle a regular delicate wash.

Also, sort by color to prevent dark fabrics from bleeding onto lighter ones, especially when washing new items for the first time.

Store it properly

Once your sportswear is clean and dry, store it somewhere it can breathe. Avoid sealing it in plastic bags or airtight drawers, which can trap moisture and cause odors. Fold your clothes neatly or hang them on hangers to help them keep their shape.

If you have seasonal gear, store it in fabric bags or breathable bins that protect against dust while allowing air circulation.

Pay attention to small details

Elastic bands, reflective strips, and printed logos need extra care. Always wash clothes inside out to protect prints and avoid ironing directly on logos or reflective details. If you notice an elastic waistband starting to loosen, reinforce it with a few stitches before it comes undone completely.

Reflective details on running clothes can become dull over time – wipe them with a damp cloth after use to keep them bright and visible.

Make maintenance a habit

Taking care of your sportswear isn’t about spending more time – it’s about building good habits. Hang your clothes to dry right after use, wash them correctly, and avoid unnecessary heat. It’s worth it – for both the environment and your wallet.

When you treat your activewear with care, it lasts longer, feels better, and keeps performing the way it should. A little effort makes a big difference in your daily routine.
